Solar City Case Study: Daegu, Korea


Daegu is currently working on a master plan to the year 2050 that will systematically incorporate renewable energy into city development. This Solar City Master Plan will lay out implentation and institutional reform strategies. Daegu is also promoting a "Green Daegu" (tree planting) program. In 2002, the Center for Solar City Daegu was established by the city and Kyungpook National University for research, planning, linking local policy with national policy, arranging new sources of financing, and assistance for local policy development. In 2004, an Energy Code was enacted for improving energy efficiency and citizen involvement in energy policy.

Existing installations and activity in the city include:

1. Solar hot water. About 3400 m2 have been installed since 2002 in public facilities like orphanages and nursing homes.

2. Solar power. 635 kW of PV have been installed in schools, parks, and other public buildings.

3. Transport. All buses in the city will be CNG-fueled by 2008. Already, about 550 out of 1700 are CNG.

4. Other. Wind, small hydro, and landfill gas projects are planned. A "green village" is planned, along with a "solar campus" program to apply solar technologies to schools and universities.
